Overheard on the BART (public transit):
Person 1: They're not paying me. I'm gonna give it another year for things to settle down, then I'm gonna transfer out.
Person 2: (encouraging person 1 to argue for more money) ...All the heroes who have endured...
Person 1: They all got stiffed!!
I suddenly remembered this song a couple of days past, when it was "unseasonably" hot (my co-worker says we now get four seasons every day). The Stones released it in the summer, so I can't listen to it now without recalling the heat—Norfolk, Virginia, before centralized home air conditioning became the norm—and I was fourteen, so I got the campiness of it all. "You're just a poor girl in a rich man's house..."

I attended a few fashion shows today and I have seen some very "fashionable" young ladies. But, they always come up short when compared to the young ladies doing their own thing.

This is precisely the boring basic black skirt that seldom gets reviewed or photographed, but it's exactly what I need. I'm short a plain black skirt, just as I'm short one pair of black shoes.
This comes in two lengths—yay! Why can't other companies do that? The "long" is typically two inches longer, so the one I'd get would likely hit right at the knee on me.
Likewise this one comes in two lengths; it was my first choice, but sold out quickly. I'm not familiar enough with this company to know if they'll restock it.
Now here's an eye-catching design; it's velvet, and the print comes in four colors (the black and putty pictured, dark purple and magenta, black and chocolate brown, black and a sort of grassy olive-y green). It's tempting, because something like this virtually is the outfit, buuuuut...I dunno. Is it useful?Labels: internet, shoes, wardrobe

Still need to go through my Museum of Flight pictures, as there are tons of them. In fact I'd like to go there again; you'd need several days to fully appreciate everything. It is an amazing place.
So, let's take a break and return to wardrobe randomness. :)

Since we San Francisco Bay-Areans didn't have much of a summer...frankly, Seattle was warmer (never thought I'd say that)...drooling over fall clothing should commence sooner for us. Heck, we could wear some of it right now.

I was disappointed in the plaids at J.Crew thus far, and hope the plaids above don't turn out to be the same, well, cruddy quality. A plaid shirt should be a minor work of art.

These appear identical to the B.ella Codori Crochet tights I own in ivory; only they have the espresso brown ones (not the graphite though).

Tried this on last time I visited the b & m; didn't like it. Nice color (dark navy blue; blue-dark, not black-dark), but too short. I wish they had this at the b & m's instead:

The Uncertainty Principle. It proves we can't ever really know... what's going on. So it shouldn't bother you. Not being able to figure anything out. Although you will be responsible for this on the mid-term.

What a wonderful skirt! I thought. Turns out it was from H & M. And that is what makes this blog so amazingly useful to me: she shops at stores I never do, from H & M and Forever 21, to Ann Taylor and Reiss, all the way up to pieces from Missoni, Diane von Furstenberg, Givenchy...a marvellous shmeer, but nowhere I ever go. Naturally, this song never hit the airwaves back home; the first Blondie record I can recall was "Heart of Glass," with "pain in the ass" edited out. The sheer bouyancy of this song is infectious. Law, like wine, is ageless. lol
These purport to be minimal cottony socks you tuck into your fancy pumps. Done right, they shouldn't show, but merely soothe your feet, particularly on hot days. Wonder if they're good at preventing feet from sliding forward in heels.
Not new foot technology, by any means, but new to my "dogs."
I'd love to try these! I don't want the black ones, so I noodled around on the Net for examples of how these look in color. Why do stockings sites always insist on showing these products only in black? What century do they live in?

Dress...I adore you.
I know this style is old school, but a navy blue dress with a conservative-ish print...anywhere from knee to calf length, with anything from no sleeves, to 3/4 sleeves...is actually quite useful. Even better if it doesn't require ironing. The fabric should be lightweight, but not flimsy.
I'm beginning to think this:

I love the idea of a stretchy camisole that stays up at the neck, and stays down at the hem...but the original camisole just seems like so much fabric. If only they made a regular-length "ShamWow of camisoles" camisole.
And, the short version comes in only black or white. The long cami boasts 46 colors, for crying in a bucket.
I realize I've never gotten around to linking to other fashion blogs.
Partly because I don't see my blog as a fashion blog. I'm too lazy to take those nifty outfit-a-day pics, I don't bother listing where I got anything; in fact I post things I never got anyway. Moreover, this used to function as more of a beauty blog, and, before that, a personal meaningless blog. I've been blogging since the late 1990's iirc. This won't remain a fashion blog.
And partly it's too much work to do much else with this blog beyond porting it from its current, soon-to-be-deprecated FTP format.
But I do read other fashion blogs. In fact I've been a bit amazed at how many of them there are now...good ones.
I started out reading Fashion for Nerds, for obvious reasons (pretty sure I googled "fashion for nerds"). :)
From there, I began to follow academichic, which features a team of "Three feminist PhD candidates at a Midwest university, on a crusade against the ill-fitting polyester suit of academic yore."
Ah...that's it. I've been slowly trying the links on Fashion For Nerds' sidebar.
I read J.Crew blogs, but not religiously (I don't shop 'Crew enough to do so). They're incredibly useful, given how many 'Crew items are offered only online or in catalogs, and for the 'Crew Final Sale.Labels: internet, modcloth, wardrobe

I stumbled across these charming blogs whilst googling for folks writing about the Sundance catalog.

I stumbled across this while idly googling for pics of Dr. Hauschka lipstick "on." Didn't expect to find many...but this author had one up (for #06 Fortissimo). Here's a site dedicated to the "perfumes of the stars": Celebrity Fragrance Guide: A Guide to Smelling Famous.
It's occurred to me, one of the most useful items in my wardrobe is...a camisole. Camisoles are seldom lauded as fashion essentials, the way shoes and jackets are, yet a good camisole can make an outfit work; a bad camisole, or no camisole at all, can ruin the entire outfit.
I own some stretchy ones...the trick is to find ones of sufficiently thick fabric. I don't mean you have to dress like a nun, but that thin see-through stuff defeats the purpose of wearing a camisole. I have a lace one too, of a nice light rayon material.
Yet I sense a "wardrobe hole." I'd like to own at least one more camisole; two would be nice. It's not something I'd drop everything to shop for (seeing as I already own several), but if I happen upon a good one while shopping, I'm sure to buy it.
