Long as I've been out here...erm, decades...only this year have I visited the Lone Cypress in Pebble Beach.

I can admit I was prepared for disappointment. Tourist attractions tend to the small, and tatty, when viewed up close. But the Lone Cypress possesses genuine magnificence. There it stands, soldiering on. They won't let you near it, have constructed a wall around it, brace the tree with cables...the venerable king in his castle.
